Celebrate the Down East Sunrise Trail on National Trails
Day in Machias
Saturday, June 2, 2007
The Sunrise Trail Coalition will host a National Trails Day celebration starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the historic Railroad Station 98 in Machias right on the Down East Sunrise Trail-to-be. Meet at the Railroad Station on the west end of the Machias dike on Route 1 for late-breaking news announcements about the Down East Sunrise Trail.
Join the bike, pedestrian, skier, ATV, snowmobile, horse parade through Machias to Whitney’s Tool Shed where the festivities will continue. Thanks to the generosity of Whitney’s Tool Shed, there will be a special playground for the kids, more information about the trail, the famous Ukulele Band, and free lunch!
After lunch,
about 12:45, there will be an eight-mile round-trip on-road bike tour to Whitneyville,
or you can take part in a walk along the Machias River section of the trail-to-be.
Bring your
bikes and walking shoes. Stay an extra day and ride the MDOT on-road
Bike Tour # 24. Maps and cue sheets can be found at www.exploremaine.org and
will be available at the celebration. Hike the trails on the Bold Coast of
Washington County. Find out more about the Sunrise Trail Coalition
at www.sunrisetrail.org.
The 87-mile Down East Sunrise Trail is planned from Ellsworth to Ayers Junction, along the Calais Branch railroad right of way. It will be a multi-use trail for walking, biking, ATVing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Initial construction may begin this year.
