Corridor Safety and Preservation

The Route 1A, Route 1 and Route 3 Corridors are the major arterial connections into and out of Hancock County. These corridors are currently threatened by seasonal use that exceeds the design capacity along several sections. Congestion and high accident rates are evident at several locations, particularly along High Street in Ellsworth. A long term process of road design, upgrading and construction as well as demand-management are needed to reduce current structural problems.

The Hancock County Planning Commission, Eastern Maine Development Corporation and the Maine Department of Transpoartation have embarked on an analysis of safety and mobility preservation analysis of the Route 1A Corridor Preliminary findings are anticipated in the Summer of 2003 with final documents anticipated by the end of the calendar year.

Land use, transportation, the natural environment and economy all influence demand and development potential along Route 1A. To illustrate this fact, several maps and graphics are included below.

Programs to promote better use of existing infrastructure and preservation of mobility are being implemented throughout Maine.

Access Management, balancing safe access to highways and mobility without congestion, engages businesses and land owners in designing driveways and entrances that are safe and do not create bottlenecks in along mobility corridors. More information can be obtained at:
