Two Summer Household Hazardous Waste Events Scheduled

The Hancock County Planning Commission announces two household hazardous waste collection events are scheduled for late summer, 2005, when residents from sponsoring communities will be able to dispose a limited amount of hazardous materials at no cost. Examples of materials that will be accepted include household cleaners, oil-based paint, used motor oil, pesticides, herbicides, and photo chemicals. Mercury-containing items also will be accepted at this year’s events. Examples of universal waste include fluorescent light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, mercury thermometers, and computer monitors.

The first collection is scheduled for August 27 at the Ellsworth High School. The next collection will be held at the Mount Desert Island High School on October 1. Individuals will be required to pre-register with their town office. All registration materials should be available beginning in mid-July for the Ellsworth collection and mid-August for the MDI collection.

The next planning session for the Ellsworth collection will take place at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension on the Boggy Brook Road in Ellsworth from 2:00 until 3:30 on Monday, July 11. The public is welcome to attend. For more information, contact the Hancock County Planning Commission at 667-7131 or schurchill@hcpcme.org.
